CEDAR: Natural and Durable

The world’s most enduring roofing material was made by nature. Cedar. For years manufacturers have tried to duplicate the natural beauty and durability of cedar shake and shingles. While imitation is flattering, it does not approach the integrity of the original. Cedar is prized for its natural beauty and durability in tough climate conditions.

TYPES OF CEDAR:

Heavy Handsplit and Resawn Shakes: For a rustic appearance on roofs.
Medium Handsplit and Resawn Shakes: For a natural appearance on roofs and walls.
Taper-sawn Shakes: The thick dimension of shakes and the sawn surface of shingles.
Cedar Shingles: For a traditional tailored appearance on roofs and walls.

ADVANTAGES OF CEDAR SHAKES AND SHINGLES

• Withstands winds up to 130 mph.
• Stands up tough against hailstorms.
• Unique cellular structure makes Cedar an excellent insulator, keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
• Withstands extreme temperatures and freeze-thaw conditions.
• Lightweight and earthquake safe. 2 ½ pounds per square foot.

CEDAR WEATHERING

Weathering

In its natural, untreated state, Cedar is a very light colored wood, ranging from a pale pinkish tan to a light golden hue. A new cedar roof will "weather," gradually changing color and ultimately turning a beautiful silvery grey.

There are several steps (as shown above) between "clear" or unweathered wood, and the weathered grey wood. First, the yellow tones of the wood will deepen, and in the initial stage of weathering the new roof will be a golden color. As time passes, depending on the climate and weather conditions, the roof will begin to show grey areas, and for a period may appear uneven and blotchy in color. This mottled appearance can be mistaken for mold or mildew, but don't worry, it is the actual cellulose enrichment of the wood surface caused by wind blown abrasion, rain and sunlight which removes the colored extratives and lignin. The color of the wood will, in time, even out to a consistent and attractive silvery-grey.

Because wood is a natural material, and not a mass-produced artificial substance, there will be slight variations amongst the different pieces of wood that make up the new roof. As such, some pieces may turn grey before others. This is normal, and will resolve with time. In a standard four-season climate, the new cedar roof will typically take about a year's time to fully weather.

Roof Care Maintenance
While we enjoy the natural weathering process of cedar shakes and shingles, over time we know that many of our customers wish to preserve their cedar roofs. North
Star suggests using a lightweight oil to seal the new roof which will allow a certain amount of moisture to
penetrate the cedar so the wood is not "waxed" and robbed of all moisture. North Star strongly discourages the use of a "water sealer," which will cause unpredictable cracking, mildew or other conditions that may be very unpleasant and unattractive. North Star recommends an oil application within the roof's first year and every 4-6 years afterward. By following this maintenance program, the customer can expect the longest life expectancy for the new roof.
